How to set up Microsoft Outlook 2007
Many people have trouble setting up email using MS Outlook. The procedure is quite simple and I will explain in detail how to do this. Older versions of Outlook do not have the auto detect feature so this tutorial may come in handy. You must have an email account set up before you can setup Microsoft Outlook. For information on how to configure your 1and1 mail settings click here.
(Note - this information is 1and1 specific but may work for most people. You will have to change the Incoming mail server and Outgoing mail server options! You may have to edit the ‘More settings> Advanced’ also.)
This tutorial is based on Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 but previous versions should be similar. If you still have problems setting up your email, just fire up your favorite search engine and search for a solution- there is a LOT of tutorials on this subject.
Prerequisites
- Internet
- Email address and password
- POP or IMAP server address
- SMTP server address
I will assume that your computer is directly connected to the internet and not being blocked by a firewall. If you have an application firewall to manage your outgoing connections you will want to open ports 21 and 587.
First open Microsoft Outlook and navigate to the toolbar menu. Select the Tools button.

Next, click on Account Settings.

Click the new tab and hit next.

You may wish to let Outlook try to automatically detect your mail server settings. If so, just type in the required information and click next. Outlook will check to see if it can find a connection. If it doesn’t, you will have to set up your email manually.

If you chose to allow Outlook to automatically detect settings and it was successful then you are finished and can start using your Email right away.
Manual Configuration
Check the box ‘Manually configure server settings or additional server types‘ and click next. Enter the required information and click More Settings.

Tick the box that says ‘My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication‘ and go to the Advanced tab. Where it says ‘Outgoing server (SMTP):‘ enter 587 in the box. You may wish to leave your mail on the server for backup. (Note - Gmail users must enable POP in the settings of their Gmail account and set ‘Incoming server’ to 995. Also choose TLS for encryption type.)

Hit next and then the ‘Test Account Settings‘ tab. You should be presented with a message box saying your connection was complete. If Outlook still cannot connect, check your settings and try again.

Open your inbox and check your mail!
